My First Birthday Party

Since I'm now in the "single digits," Mommy and Daddy said I could write my own blog post! I thought I'd share a few moments from my first birthday party. Mommy put a special party dress on me; it was so pretty--full of flowers just like my cake. Then, I took a really good nap before my family and friends arrived. We played and "opened gifts"--that's what everyone called this funny thing they were asking me to do. Usually, Daddy and Mommy don't like it when I tear up stuff; maybe I wasn't doing it right because today they were showing me how to do just that! (I think I started to understand when my cousin, Delaney, and my friend, Mia, showed me. Mia's first birthday party was last week, so she knew all about tearing paper the right way.) Well, after I started tearing paper, I found the coolest things inside! Daddy and Mommy told me that people gave me these things because they wanted me to know I'm special and loved and giving gifts is one way to say that. They also told me that the best gifts were all of the hugs, kisses and joy everyone shared. I agree, especially now that I can blow kisses back! I wish I knew how to say or sign, "You are very special and I love you very much!" because that is what I would tell everyone who celebrated with me that day--those who could be here in person and those who were sending hugs across the miles. Here are some other things I learned that day.... This is called a birthday cake. People buy or make these for someone celebrating a birthday.
This is a candle. People get candles on their cakes to match how many fingers they are. Daddy said some people stop putting the right number of candles on their cake when it becomes hazardous, whatever that means. I hope I don't have to worry about a "habbardish" for a long time because I liked when we all thought really hard about something and pretended we had Kleenexes at the same time.
I stuck my finger in my pretty flower cake; I just had to touch it! Nobody cared that I messed up the pretty flower. In fact, they saw I liked touching it so much that they gave me this one to play with! I'm not sure why, but, when I put the funny white lotion on my legs, everyone started laughing (but only my cousin, Kyle, wanted to touch me). Everybody even helped me taste it. So confusing...Mommy and Daddy never let me taste the lotion they put on me after bath time.
I guess birthdays are not only about celebrating with family and friends, but also about having a day off from the rules. I've decided I like birthdays very much!!

Greetings, Guests!

We will use this blog to share news as we move one step closer to Baby Rock each day.

For those who need a bit of background...
We decided to adopt a baby from China in September/October of 2005. After completing mountains of paperwork, background checks, fingerprinting, etc. (collectively called the dossier), we were officially on China's waiting list on April 14th, 2006. This moment of acceptance is called the log-in date (LID). This date is quite significant because families are matched with children according to LID. If you follow referral dates (the date a waiting child is matched with a waiting family), you will be able to see how close we are to being matched--at least in theory. When we started the process three and a half years ago, China was matching month for month, meaning one month of LIDs were taking one month to match. Now, unfortunately, one month of LIDs is taking about four months or more. So...we wait...we vent...we cry...we breathe...we hope...we believe.

*To our family and friends-
A huge hug and thank you for sharing our frustration and our joy as we practice patience and faith, knowing Baby Rock is just over the horizon.
